Caernarfon Castle

Caernarfon Castle was one of those rare projects that had everything -  a stunning venue, a plethora of human stories and a client open to a fresh approach to the way history can be conveyed.

Following a successful tendering process, Cod Steaks found themselves shoulder-to-shoulder with the client in a joint effort to create a series of unique and informative installations within a short timescale. The challenge was made more interesting, by the need to tell the complex stories of Caernarfon in a way that was accessible to a wide range of visitor groups.

Amongst the winning ideas was 'Game of Crowns'. This huge 'chess board' fills a room and illustrates the power, influence and status of the various English kings and Welsh princes using height as a scale. By allowing visitors to move amongst the highly detailed figures, the subject naturally becomes more tangible and easier to understand.

'Eight incidents in the life of Eleanor of Castile' is another success. This dynamically lit octagonal installation is constructed from over 1000 individual pieces. It captures a different event in Eleanor's life on each of it's sides, guiding the viewer effortlessly from her birth to her death.

Following Cod Steaks work, Caernarfon has become the flagship historic site for Cadw and the Welsh Government.
